“Movember” on Mt. Pacifico for the Hoshnasi SOTA meetup!
Not an activation but a quick hike up the peak to drop a couple gallons of water for my SOTA pals. Wish I could have stayed and played radio but need to maintain my 100% unique activation status and had to go get my bride from LAX.

Remote Backcountry Ham Radio SOTA Activation - Pilot Knob
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
This was the toughest SOTA for me to date. For whatever reason I was impacted by elevation this time and it took me a little to acclimate since base camp was at 11, 352' ASL. I was the oldest and biggest guy on this trip and carried the heaviest pack at 39.5 pounds total. I didn't have the luxury to cross load my gear with somebody else but that didn't stop me from keeping up with the pack. Wou...
Fast Ham Radio SOTA Activation on Reyes Peak - Rapid Deployment
Переглядів 3,7 тис.5 років тому
Had to turn and burn on this activation to meet a deadline only to find out it was handled 😡Either way I was able to setup, activate then tear down in about 35 minutes. Made my six QSO's and had to bolt. This was good prepping practice if I ever wanted to become a prepper. Being proficient with your gear is something I preach and why I think SOTA is so useful for real world emergency communicat...

Mt Lawlor W6:CT 089 Ham Radio SOTA Hike & Snakes
Переглядів 1,9 тис.5 років тому
What I thought would be a quick turn and burn SOTA hike while the wife was at work turned into a little extra time and some critters. Saw some lion prints and dealt with some steep terrain as I made my way to the top of Mt. Lawlor for a Ham Radio SOTA activation. APRS worked perfectly and the contacts came nicely. Took the "easy" route out of there though it was longer. FOLLOW ME: Twitter: twit...
4 SOTA Peaks 2019 Field Day
Переглядів 1,1 тис.5 років тому
Taking on a SOTA adventure during Field Day is something I have done before. For some reason this year it was much tougher and felt like the hardcore contesters weren't interested in a duplicate to help somebody else out. Either way, SOTA . is Field Day every time you activate and if you are in the So Cal area and looking for a quick 30 points that are nearly all drive ups but the one peak then...
Antenna Wars Part Two - The Controlled Environment

This is Part Two of #Antenna Wars - The Controlled Environment where I show you the KG6HQD Speaker Wire Antenna and the now tuned K9ARV dipole. They were deployed the same, and the results from the RBN or www.reversebeacon.net are included. Ran both antennas for an hour at 10 watts output on the Elecraft KX2 ham radio. Winter Field Day 2019 - Idaho SOTA & Ham Radio
Переглядів 3,8 тис.5 років тому
As I continue to stretch my legs and travel around the US for SOTA, it was only right I stopped in northern Idaho and visited my dad, a soon to be ham radio operator. After trudging up some snow covered trails and roads we found our first summit to activate for winter field day 2019. Luckily cell service works well in that area because soon after we spotted we knocked out 11 contacts inside of ...
Fast | Steep | Got it DONE! Ham Radio & SOTA

This was the second peak of the day and while short it presented it's own set of challenges. Parking is excellent with restrooms nearby and the trail is easily navigable but a little steep. good video. i figured out from the antenna book about the transmission line. using the same wire you can use 1/4 lambda, 3/4 lamda, 5/4 lambda etc. it totally cancels the impedance of the dipole at those intervals. so using the same wire for 20m antenna, if your ears of the dipole are 5m, your transmission line using the same speaker wire to be matched can be 5m, 15m, 25m, 35m etc just adding a half lambda (10m) over and over. 5m is kinda short for getting to my radio so i'm building mine with 15m transmission line. (total distance from radio to end of one of the ears is 20m). you cannot use transmission line of half lambda, 1 lambda, 3/2 lambda etc as that will actually double the impedance.

You are not actually linking the repeaters in this video. You are doing gateway and callsign routing. Linking requires the call sign of the other repeater, the module, then L in the 8th spot. That would actually link the repeater modules to each other.

I'm struggling with SWR and would be grateful for any advice on how to adjust. I have it supported by a mast in the center in an inverted vee configuration. Angle of left/ right is between 90-110 degrees. Collapsible mast; so, I've tried it at approx 18' high and also approx 22' high. Ends are 17.25' long and feedline is approx. 32.5' long (I suspect this is where the issue is). I've tried rolling up the ends of the legs to shorten them. I'm measuring with a NanoVNA (with an adapter for SMA to BNC). Using a BNC connector for the speaker wire. 22 AWG speaker wire. So far I've tried full length legs (17.25'). I've shortened to 16.5', 16.75', even all the way down to 12'. I keep getting SWR readings around 3:1 or higher. There are two lower readings (around 13.7Mhz and another lower reading at around 17.3 Mhz) and they are persistent. If I lengthen or shorten the legs, I can get those low dips to move just a bit, but not enough to affect the 20M band. I.e., I cannot get the lower SWR readings to move to where they'd be useful for me on 20M regardless of whether I lengthen or shorten the legs (rolling/ unrolling at the ends). So, I went to The Antenna Book to read up more on this antenna and transmission lines. I see the formula in section 23.1.2 for calculating the velocity of propagation. For 1/2 wavelength, 491.8/frequency x VF (velocity factor of the wire). In section 19.1.1 the book indicates that 22 AWG wire has a VF of .7 for a frequency of 13.67 (close enough for 14Mhz), so that's what I used. Based on this formula and the description of this antenna in Chapter 19--where it indicates that the transmission line needs to be a factor of 1/2 the wavelength, I noticed that my "feedline" isn't the proper length at 32.5' long. So, I tried coiling up the end of the feedline at my antenna analyzer and that seemed to lower the overall SWR a bit, but still not below 2:1 anywhere on the scale, and not at 14-14.350 Mhz range where I need it. The only thing I haven't tried is lengthening my feedline, since that would require splicing in additional line or starting over with longer line overall. Any advice? I'm assuming I'm getting very different readings than you have, as you've used this in the field a lot.

    • @RodneyTronic
      @RodneyTronic Рік тому

Your SWR problem may be caused by coiling up the feedline part. In my understanding you cannot coil it up like you can with coax. Try cutting it instead. Let us know how you get on.
